Giving Opportunities

We Need You!

As a focal point for education, research, study and individual inquiry, the University Libraries are essential to the vibrant creative quality of life at Carnegie Mellon.

University president Jared L. Cohon describes the library as a place where students and faculty can explore beyond the boundaries of their academic disciplines -- a place that provides the community with opportunities to pursue self-motivated learning in the broadest sense.

The university is challenged to meet the needs of Carnegie Mellon students, faculty and research staff with available budgets, and the next quarter century will be especially difficult.

While we must continue to build and preserve print and archival collections that support campus teaching and research, we must also provide and preserve the digital and multimedia collections that our community has come to expect. We also need to develop a flexible infrastructure that will enable us to keep pace with rapid change.

How You Can Help

We have established gift programs that you might consider, and we will be happy to talk with you about other gift ideas as well.

  • Library Legacy
An affordable way to establish a named gift.

  • Library Enhancement Fund
Help to address the most urgent current needs of the University Libraries.

  • Book Gift Fund
Recognize a family member, colleague or friend as you also help to develop broad and distinctive library collections.

  • Endowments
An endowment is truly "a gift that keeps on giving" -- the principal remains intact, and only a percentage of the earned income is used annually.

  • Planned Giving
Make a major gift and receive income for life.

  • Gifts of Materials
We have acquired many treasured items from donors who have entrusted us to preserve their materials and to make them available to the community.

Gifts Are Tax-Deductible

All gifts to the University Libraries are tax-deductible within IRS rules and regulations. All gifts are recorded in Carnegie Mellon development records, and are formally acknowledged by an official university receipt. Please consult the instructions to Internal Revenue forms 1040 and 8283 or your tax advisor when taking an income tax deduction for a gift of books, manuscripts, bound periodicals, etc. We appreciate corporate matching gifts.

You Make A Difference

No matter how or what you give, you will make a difference at Carnegie Mellon. Donors and friends of the library help to:

  • Build and preserve useful collections of books, periodicals, archival materials, and a growing array of digital and multimedia information.

  • Renovate and refurbish facilities for users, creating effective and healthful environments for the new information workplace.

  • "Think outside the box" with initiatives to integrate print and digital materials, and expand library services with new technology.
