Still have questions?SciFinder Scholar is an interface to scientific information from Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). SciFinder Scholar allows you to search millions of chemical references and substances. You can search by research topic, author name, structure and substructure, chemical name or CAS Registry Number, company/name organization, browse the table of contents in journals, and reaction query.
SciFinder Scholar provides point-and-click access to the entire CA database, with references to nearly 9,500 journals going back to 1907, as well as patents from 50 active patent issusing authorities around the world, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations. It covers world-wide literature in all areas of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and related sciences. Citations are linked to full text articles of electronic journals to which Carnegie Mellon subscribes. Links to full text patents are also available in many cases.

Carnegie Mellon University students, faculty and staff may access and use SciFinder Scholar several ways. You can download SciFinder to your desktop or you can now use the Web Version of SciFinder. As a courtesy to other users, please remember to log out each time you finish using SciFinder Scholar.

First Time Web Users: There is a required one-time registration for access.
To access from off-campus, you must use the WebVPN: http://www.library.cmu.edu/Services/remote.html
To Download to your Desktop:
SciFinder will work from any Carnegie Mellon on-campus site. If you are accessing the Internet from off-campus or you are using wireless on campus, you must use the Cisco VPN client to access SciFinder. Instructions for setting up the Cisco VPN client and registering your computer can be found at:

- Download to your desktop on the Carnegie Mellon network:
SciFinder Scholar can be used on any computer connected to the Carnegie Mellon campus network. To connect to SciFinder Scholar on your desktop, you must first download and install SciFinder Scholar client software onto your computer. Client software is available for Windows and Macintosh operating systems, but not UNIX or Linux.You must read and accept the appropriate user agreement, then unzip files to download the SciFinder Scholar software on your computer -- or borrow the installation CD-ROM from the E&S Library Reference Desk or Mellon Institute Library Office. Then follow the Install Instructions. Downloading the software and searching SciFinder Scholar is restricted to campus IP addresses.
- Use on PCs in the library:
SciFinder Scholar is downloaded and available for use on all public PCs in the University Libraries.- Download to a computer outside the Carnegie Mellon network:
SciFinder Scholar is also available for remote user access. Follow the instructions to download the SciFinder Scholar software -- or borrow the installation CD-ROM from the E&S Library Reference Desk or Mellon Institute Library Office.
